Director, Pitt EXCEL Program

Alaine M. Allen, director of the Pitt EXCEL Program, is well-acquainted with the life of an engineering student: she initially majored in engineering, participated in a science honors program as a college student, and graduated with an undergraduate degree in physics and secondary education.

About Alaine Allen

She has made a career of assisting students who are preparing to pursue, or currently pursuing, a college degree. Allen was formerly the assistant director of the Pitt Engineering Career Access Program (PECAP) Pre-College Component, a physics teacher for the Woodland Hills School District, and a graduate research assistant for QUASAR, a math education reform project at the University of Pittsburgh Learning Research and Development Center.

Allen has a Bachelor of Science degree from Lincoln University and a Master of Education degree in policy, planning and evaluation from the University of Pittsburgh.  She will soon complete her doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, where her research involves exploring factors that enable minority students to succeed as engineering majors.

Pitt EXCEL Program

Pitt EXCEL is a comprehensive program committed to the recruitment, retention, and graduation of women and other students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the field of engineering.
