SPACE Resident Hall Living

Engineering freshmen have the option of living in SPACE (Students Preparing for Academics and Careers in Engineering). SPACE consists of four residence hall floors located in the Tower A, less than a block away from the School of Engineering.

Why should I live in SPACE?

Some of the advantages to living in the SPACE community include:

  • All students on the residence hall floors are taking the same curriculum, so everyone has exams at the same time. This means the floors are quiet when students need them to be.
  • Because everyone is working on similar assignments and projects, students are also able to literally go door to door to find assistance.
  • As a career, engineering is very "team" focused. In the classroom we prepare our students for that experience with team projects as early as their first term. Working with partners is easier when they live next door.
  • Special programming opportunities are offered to SPACE residents. Recent programs have included field trips to the Carnegie Science Center, to the Three Rivers Stadium implosion, and to campus construction sites, to name a few.

How do I apply to live in SPACE?

Applications for 2009-2010 SPACE Living/Learning Community at the University of Pittsburgh are now closed.  All applications are currently being processed in the order in which they have been received.  If your application was submitted prior to your deposit, the date of your tuition deposit will count as the date your SPACE application was submitted. All applications not accepted into SPACE will automatically be considered for alternative on-campus housing.  The next notification you will receive will be in July from Panther Central/Housing Services informing you of your housing placement. Thank you for your applications!

SPACE is a very popular living arrangement option and each year more students apply than there are beds to offer. To aid in the selection process, students who are interested in living on one of the SPACE floors were required to complete an application and submit it to our office by May 22, 2009.
