PLUS 3

The University of Pittsburgh's School of Engineering and College of Business Administration have combined to offer you a unique study abroad opportunity: Plus3. For the past several years this program has met with tremendous success. The program was awarded the Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education by the Institute for International Education.

Plus3 is a three-credit, two-week optional add-on to CBA's required Managing Complex Environments (MCE) course and Engineering's ENG 12 course. The program is an international research project held immediately after the end of spring term. The program is targeted to students between their freshman and sophomore years that involves teams of both business and engineering students who will work together on a project involving travel in one of the international destinations listed below.

Travel Dates

Brazil, China, Germany and Vietnam
Depart United States: Saturday, May 2, 2009; Depart country: Saturday, May 16, 2009

Chile
Depart United States: Saturday, May 2, 2009; Depart Chile: Friday, May 15, 2009

(Due to the international date line and the various flight departure times, some flights will actually arrive at the the country location on Sunday May 3, and may return to the United States on Sunday May 17. However, all flights will leave the United States on Saturday, May 2.)

COSTS:

Fee includes:

  • Tuition for three credits
  • Housing
  • Some meals
  • Field trips to sites of academic and cultural importance
  • Visa fees
  • Health insurance

For Business Students:
Students who receive a 3.0 GPA or higher during fall 2008 semester will be awarded a minimum $500 scholarship to be applied to the Plus3 program pending acceptance to the program.
For Engineering Students:
Students who receive a 3.0 GPA or higher during fall 2008 semester will be awarded a minimum $500 scholarship to be applied to the Plus3 program pending acceptance to the program.

Additional Expenses:

Students will need to budget for meals not covered in program fee and personal expenses. An estimated budget for these expenses is shown below. Because students' spending habits vary depending on living and travel preferences, this should only be a rough approximation.

  • Administrative Fee $350 (billed through billpay upon registration)
  • Some additional Meals and Personal expenses $ 300-800 (dependent on spending habits)
  • Round trip airfare (depends on location): $ 800 - $1,600

Requirements

  • Must be registered during the Spring 2009 term for the Managing Complex Environments (MCE Business) course or one of the Engineering 0012/0715 courses.
  • Must have at least a 2.75 QPA (CBA Students) and 2.50 QPA (Engineering students)
  • Students must have completed two semesters at Pitt prior to the program departure.
  • There is no language requirement for this program.
  • Must attend mandatory class meetings during the spring term of 2009 (four class meetings held during the spring semester prior to the international portion of the program).
  • Students MUST have a valid passport at the time of submitting application, or must present a copy of their completed passport application.
  • Students under disciplinary sanctions will not be admitted to the program.
  • If a student obtains a disciplinary sanction after admission to the program participation will be revoked.

Applications

Completed applications are due to the Study Abroad Office no later than Thursday, January 15, 2009 by 4:00 pm. Individual interviews with the faculty and staff members participating in the programs will be conducted soon after the application deadline. Students will be informed of program acceptance by mid February 2008.
