The Co-op Process Tips for a Successful Experience

Tips for a Successful Co-op Experience from the Cooperative Education Program Advisory Board Members

The Advisory is comprised of our co-op employers. We polled our advisory board members on areas that they felt students should be aware of when interviewing and working. Keep these factors in mind when looking for the right co-op position for you.

They include:

  1. Know the co-op rotation schedules. We also have information on average starting salaries if the employer requests it.

  2. Transportation - Will you need a car to travel to the job site? Is there field work involved that will require transportation?

  3. Know employer's policies on dress codes, hours of work, holidays, overtime.

  4. All qualified students have the technical knowledge necessary for the position. Make sure your appearance is professional and that you use proper grammar while being interviewed.

  5. Discuss with the employer how you can make a contribution.

  6. Employers want students to ask them questions.

  7. Know the conditions of your employment; i.e., start dates, hours, rotation schedule.

  8. As a co-op student, grade "A" work on the assignment is expected and necessary.

  9. There is a solution to every problem. Don't hesitate to ask your supervisor or the co-op office for help.

  10. Get involved in extra-curricular activities at the work site. You'll enjoy yourself and feel like part of the team.

  11. Investigate long-term opportunities of the company.
